GHUCCTS Research Grand Round

Research Grand Rounds Presents “Nature and Nurture in Childhood Obesity: Genetic, Environmental, Behavioral and Metabolic insights from the Viva la Familia study.”

Sponsor: MHRI and GHUCCTS
Time: 12 - 1:30 PM (lunch provided at 1 PM)
Location: MedStar Washington Hospital Center, 6th Floor, CTEC Auditorium, 110 Irving Street NW, Washington DC 20010
Speaker(s): Shelley Cole, PhD

Dr. Cole serves as Associate Professor and co-Lead of the Population Health Program at Texas Biomedical Research Institute, and unit lead for the Southwest National Primate Research Center Genomics and Data Science Core, in San Antonio. Throughout her career, she used high-throughput genetic techniques, coupled with state-of-the-art phenotyping to elucidate genetic risks for common, complex diseases. Most of her collaborative clinical and translational research spans disciplines and institutions to focus on minority population groups that have very high rates of metabolic and other diseases yet have been traditionally under-represented in genetic and medical research. The Viva la Familia study included 1030 children along with 631 parents from 319 families of Mexican or Central American ancestry. Metabolic and biochemical measures, assessments of physical activity, diet, and body composition, along with genetics and a rich family structure revealed new insights into childhood obesity and inform the design of studies in other populations. Dr. Cole will present an overview of the Viva la Familia study, selected key findings, and future directions, including opportunities for collaboration in this and other of her clinical research programs.
